Guest post… By my dad! A divine surprise at Bistro 70 – Painesville, OH

Two things I never expected to happen when I launched this blog last month: 1) that it would get the kind of traffic it’s been getting – thank you! (even my dad subscribed to it!), and 2) that my dad would not only comment on a post, but also write an unsolicited guest post!  My dad is a technology-savvy guy (he’s the guy at the left of the picture), so it probably shouldn’t surprise me, but it did – and I’m delighted to share his story with you. This past Saturday was one of those rare occasions when my lovely wife Pam and I decided to go out for dinner. Okay, maybe not rare. Okay, maybe not rare at all…we have dinner out every Saturday. More often than not, we find ourselves at our favorite dining establishment Bistro 70, in downtown Painesville, OH.

IMO, this little gem of a restaurant is one of – if not the best – fine dining experiences to be found in Lake County, and perhaps in all of NE Ohio. From the rather unassuming street level entry at 70 North St. Clair Street (hence the name) you might never suspect the fabulous treat in store.

We are always greeted warmly by Hostess Vivian, and Katie – one of several friendly and cheerful severs. Most visits, Katie gets stuck with us.  Once again on Saturday, she drew the short straw, and we were very lucky. Once seated at our corner table, Pam had her wine and I had my standard iced tea.

Truthfully, I did not intend to have Katie pick my meal tonight. But, in addition to a great menu on the weekends, Chef Keith prepares three scrumptious specials. Saturday was no exception. The choices included a seafood dish: blackened divers scallops, roasted bok choy, and sticky rice. The second dish was surf and turf, Bistro 70 style: filet and crab, with asparagus, and potato. Finally, a black and blue pasta dish with pasta (obviously!), filet, crumbled blue cheese, and a beef-based sauce. All sounded delicious, and therein was my dilemma.

Just like my daughter Kerri often is, I became momentarily indecisive. After my wife ordered the black and blue pasta special, the die was cast – I would become a guest blogger on “She ordered what?!?”!

Katie was thrilled to select my meal for. I had no idea if it would be one of the specials, or something off the menu. What I did know is that I was in very capable hands. Not only is everything very good at Bistro 70, as I mentioned Katie is our sever regularly, so she has a pretty good idea that I will eat almost anything.

Meals always start with warm bread served with olive oil and cheese for dipping. (no butter). Tonight was not an exception.

This was followed soon after by a small house salad of greens, tomato, onion and house made blue cheese dressing. Both the bread and the salad hit the spot, since on Saturdays neither of us take time for lunch. It was a long time between breakfast and dinner, and we were hungry!

Soon enough, it was time for my mystery entrée. The black and blue pasta Pam ordered looked and smelled terrific. I was kept in suspense until Katie placed a beautifully plated blackened scallop dinner in front of me. Here are the details: three V-10 divers scallops, pan-seared, finished with a white wine miso butter sauce, braised bok choy and sticky rice.

(I know the picture shows four scallops – I guess I am special). Occasionally I order the scallops off the menu, as good as they are Saturday’s special was truly, well, special! Perfectly prepared, scallops were firm yet tender, blackened just enough to enhance the flavor, the white wine miso butter sauce a provided a creamy texture. The braised bok choy was flavorful, and sticky rice is always good.

Kudos to Katie – she did a great job. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner. Hats off to Keith – he prepared another excellent dinner. Ah, but it is not over.

Recently, like last week recently, Bistro 70 started serving special desserts. The multi-talented server Katie is also a baker. Not just an ordinary baker, but a baker of the most exquisite, and moist cakes.

While we normally do not indulge in desserts, except perhaps on special occasions, how could we pass up red velvet cake with cream cheese and brown sugar frosting? Along with a cup of fresh-brewed coffee,  and great service, a perfect ending to another great dining experience at Bistro 70.

Bistro 70, Painesville, OH

Although I live in Dearborn, MI, I still own a home in Painesville, OH.  I only lived in it for 2 1/2 years, but I loved living there.  One of the perks was being just up the road from one of my favorite spots: Bistro 70.

I had become friends with Keith, the owner and head chef through frequent visits.  For a while, I even served on the wait staff there.  I had also introduced my family, now weekly regulars, to the Bistro.

Keith changes the menu up regularly (quarterly or so?), but there are always great options!  So, frequently, I am unable to decide exactly what I want, and ask the servers to choose for me.  I’ll usually give them 2-3 options that I’m considering, and have them surprise me with their choice.  Over the years, I’ve had nightly specials – seafood, steak, and other delicious recipes Keith and his staff whip up.

I’ve also had wonderful dishes off the standard menu.  Some favorites: Seared Ahi Tuna Steak, Fettucini Rustica, Grilled Flat Iron Steak, and Maryland Crab Cakes.

There are others that are not on the current menu: some Asian fare, other pasta dishes, as well as more seafood.  And, don’t pass up the desserts!  They’re divine!

And, I can’t lie…my friends and I have spent many a night hanging at the bar with Joe, the greatest bartender!

In fact, I had my farewell party here when I left OH for CA.  Good times!

And, happy anniversary Keith and company!  Eight years, this week!  🙂

Jersey Mike’s, Mentor, OH

Friday nights at my parents’ house generally means going to Yours Truly restaurant for dinner.  I happened to go there for lunch with a friend of mine today, so I politely opted out of dinner there tonight.

I had an ulterior motive as well – it’s NFL Draft night (round 2), and a handful of my Clemson Tigers are due to be drafted!  (as I write this, both Andre Branch and Dwayne Allen have been picked by the Jaguars and Colts, respectively)

So, my mom suggested that we order sandwiches and stay home – to enable my addiction to the Draft.  We called dad, asked him to pick up sandwiches, chips, and wine (duh!), and he happily obliged!  He planned to go to Jersey Mike’s and asked what kind of sandwich I wanted, and then asked if I wanted him to surprise me.  You see, he spent part of last night reading my blog, so it was fresh in his mind!  I gave him some guidance, but also told him he could take liberties and surprise me.  So…

I ended up with a turkey sub on wheat bread, with tomatoes, pickles, banana peppers, lettuce, mustard and provolone.

Let me say that Jersey Mike’s makes a pretty darned good sub!  I only wish they had avocado (and that’s probably because I JUST returned from the west coast, where avocado is abundant).

Dad did well with his choice.  Perfect Draft food!  Except for the fact that it filled me up too much for me to enjoy leftover Buffalo Chicken Dip, which I made for the 1st round viewing “party”.

If you’re on the east side of Cleveland, and looking for a decent sub sandwich – give Jersey Mike’s a try.  And, perhaps let the person behind the order (or counter) serve up a bit of surprise. 😉

And…GO TIGERS!!!!

Grovewood Tavern, Cleveland, OH

While I’ve had many wonderful experiences at different restaurants, Grovewood Tavern in Cleveland, OH, was the first spot I decided to highlight in this blog.

Grovewood (www.grovewoodtavern.com) is a quaint place – so quaint that you pass by the kitchen as you enter the joint! And, it has great food! Definitely worth a visit when you’re in Cleveland.

Last weekend, I went to Grovewood with a couple of friends, and pulled my usual stunt…Anna, our (delightful – Jager-loving/hating) server, was tasked with ordering my entire meal – soup to nuts. She was immediately up for the challenge, though she showed a little hesitancy as the evening progressed. No need…she did a great job!

Excellent choice! Then, the Cherry Duck with garlic mashed potatoes and mixed veggies – again, YUM! And, it’s a dish I would not likely have ordered on my own – so many other great options…cherry duck wouldn’t likely have bubbled up to the top!

Finally, my friend and I split what I deem to be the best Tiramisu I’ve had in years (possibly ever!).
