Alphabet Soup – part II (Massachusetts)

This past weekend I headed east and visited a close friend of mine, Eric (whose last name is a ridiculous mess of letters, and thus I dubbed him “Alphabet Soup” when I first met him, “AS”, for short.)  I hadn’t seen him in just about a year, and I hadn’t seen our mutual friends (whom I met through him) since that last trip either.  Azelie and Trey (aforementioned mutual friends) are getting married in May, and I wanted to squeeze a visit in before their planning chaos prevented us from being able to spend quality time together.  So, we decided that I would visit during St. Patrick’s Day weekend – which also serves as the joyous (errr, 28th (29 is just too obvious!)) anniversary of my birth, and an annual reminder of just how lucky I am to be blessed with a good life, great friends, and fabulous family!

While I didn’t necessary pull a true “She Ordered What?” all weekend, I did often defer to Eric to choose my/our food.  And, sometimes, it’s just fun to share culinary and personal experiences – even if they don’t follow the theme of this blog to a T.

I arrived Friday afternoon, and Eric was kind enough to drive ~2 hours east to pick me up at the airport.  After a ridiculous scene at the airport that mimicked that one in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (skip to ~2:10), wherein we were on the phone, trying to find each other, we headed west toward Eric’s place in Greenfield.

By the time we got home, we were both starving, so we headed to Magpie for some pizza.  We were greeted with a “Here they are!!!”.

Turns out, Jim, the lovely (and cute!) proprietor, and his staff were greeting us as the first customers of the evening.  I joked that we should be wearing blue wigs – it was 4PM, and here we were having dinner!  Or, was it a late lunch?  Not sure!

Before I even checked the menu, Eric suggested ordering the “bread to share” with sea salt and olive oil and the Meatball pizza.  I was totally agreeable, so that’s what we went with.  And…it was ah-mazing!

We, reluctantly, decided against the “Fudge bottom pie” and the special shot of the day: Jameson w/ pickle juice and a pickle  (Eric thought it sounded fantastic!).

Later, we headed over to Northampton, which I’ve previously posted about to meet up with Trey, Azelie and Trey’s roommate from college, Chris, who was visiting for the weekend.  We hung out, catching up at Trey’s place, before heading to The Elevens for a monthly stand-up comedy show.  Trey was kind enough to pay our cover charges (very reasonable, folks!), and Azelie handed out our raffle tickets.  Turns out, everyone with proper admission gets entered into a raffle.

There were some really funny comedians that night – a variety of younger and older, male and female, “cleaner” and “more risqué”… though I have to admit that most of us were busy talking amongst ourselves and missed many of the jokes that got really big laughs.

At the end of the comedy show, the raffle prize was to be drawn.  Confident in my recent winning streak, including my second consecutive strong showing at The Phillip DeVito Reverse Raffle, I was boasting to Trey that I just KNEW that I’d win, especially when he said that the prize would be a ticket to the next show.  I’m an out-of-towner, and wouldn’t be able to go to the show, so surely I would win.  And as the raffle numbers were called off…my numbers matched, one for one…I did win!!!

Turns out that I had won a perfectly executed surprise birthday cake and celebration!  My friends DUPED me – big time!  Thank you, Aze (the clear Mastermind), Trey, and Eric. Y’all stink at following orders, but you’re fantastic people!

We ended up sharing this cake with a man with a March 16th birthday, and with the wait staff at The Elevens.  Later, we may have *allegedly* regretted that decision – meaning the “less sober” folks in our group may have wished for cake at the end of the night.

Okay, to be fair, Aze was ready to run, but I was still scared because I had not trained well at all for the race!  Despite my Asylum training, running was not a natural workout for me these days!

On Saturday morning, Eric and I headed to Shelburne Fall Coffee Roasters for breakfast on the way to Holyoke for the annual St. Patrick’s day 10K.  I had fond memories of Shelburne Fall from last year.  I’m not normally a fan of cream cheese on bagels, but last year, Eric had convinced me to try their homemade veggie cream cheese.  Folks, I am a fan!  Yet, on Saturday, I found myself trying the “Hadley” breakfast sandwich – bagel, strip bacon, cheese, and egg – and it was a PERFECT start to race day. Note: the race didn’t start until 1PM, so the sandwich wasn’t going to sit heavily in my stomach. (until it did)

Aze (actual name = Catherine) and I ended up running pretty much step-for-step during the whole race.  She was a GREAT running partner!  Easy-going, yet motivating.  Between mile 5 and 6, I recall Aze asking “Am I trying to keep up with you, or are you trying to keep up with me?”  The answer?  We didn’t know!  We’re just a good match!  We both finished with the exact same time:  1 hour, 1 minute, 0 sec.  Go figure!

That night, we spent some time hanging at Trey’s again – I got a bit of “guy talk education” when Eric left me with the guys so he could visit a friend for a bit (thanks a lot, Eric!).  I’m still hopeful that the scars will heal! LOL.

A bit later, Eric and I decided to go to enjoy a sushi dinner.  The others were happily drinking, so we ventured off together – without them.  We went to Moshi Moshi, and had a great dinner!  We went up the spiral staircase, sat on the second floor and enjoyed the Spicy Tuna Roll (2x over), the Moshi roll, and the Rainbow roll, along with the Tuna sashimi.

Everything was truly excellent.  We left as happy patrons.

And, then, headed to East Hampton to the Brass Cat to meet Eric’s friend Brannon, and his girlfriend, Abbi.  We had a nice time chatting with these two – down-to-earth, funny, real, and all-around good people.  Eric, has really fantastic friends.  We share that trait.

Following our chat with Brannon and Abbi, we chased down Aze and the group at “The Deuce”.  The “group” consisted of Trey’s sister Cassie, whom I had met last year too, but hadn’t spent much time with prior to this trip, and Aze, since the guys had gone home and “crashed”, per se.

I have to admit that I was incredibly tired late Saturday night, since I hadn’t slept well Friday night, and was jealous that Aze had (wisely) snuck a nap in earlier.  She and Cassie were dancing up a storm, and they were having a blast doing so!  I WISH I had their rhythm, and their energy!  Luckily, Eric and I shared that lack of talent. We ended up heading home early to catch some zzzz’s.

On Sunday morning, we lounged around for a bit laughing out loud to this series of video clips prior to heading into downtown Greenfield to grab brunch at The Brass Buckle. Eric had the Cowboy (hashbrown patty, bbq, scallion sour cream, bacon & egg on Texas Toast), and I had the Buckle (rocket pesto, tomato, avocado (I LOVE avocado!), & egg on Texas Toast).

Both were INCREDIBLE breakfast sandwiches!  (we shared with each other)  We also couldn’t pass up the Irish Car Bomb cupcakes, made with Guiness and Jameson Whiskey.  Hey, it was my birthday (and St. Paddy’s day), after all!

The cupcakes were good, but I wouldn’t say they were super special.  They had more of a carrot cake (mild spice) flavor to them than the chocolate base I had anticipated.  Still, we managed to polish them off!

Then, we decided to head into Boston for the day/evening.  We took the T in from Brookline and headed toward the North End.  After walking all over searching for a place to eat, we settled on ducking into a little Italian joint called La Familia Spagnuolo’s.  We wanted something casual and laid back.  Well, um…

We witnessed the most epic fight between the owners and a patron that I have ever seen – In. My. Life.

I tried to record it, but by the time I got myself together, I had missed the majority of the epic cat fight.

Eric and I sat across the table from each other, each looking like two deer in headlights.  What were we to do in this situation?  Two extremely loud women were yelling at the top of their lungs at each other – trading insults and threatening to call the cops.  This lasted for a good ten minutes or so.  And, we never received an explanation or an apology from the owners, so we’re really not sure exactly what went down!

We did, however, have a tasty stuffed mushrooms (really delicious!)

Parts of the pizza were missing sauce, but it was still a good pie.  I’d say, if you want, err, a “colorful” atmosphere, this was probably a good place to try.  🙂

Yet, we were happy to leave that restaurant and find a nice place to grab a few drinks and catch up.  We ended up in the Faneuil Hall area for the rest of the evening – just having a good time hanging out.

And, while I am wildly UNphotogenic, I wanted a picture with the St. Paddy’s day headband some randomly nice woman gave me earlier in the evening.  Too bad I wasn’t paying attention to the fact that they were backward (they actually light up) before Eric took the picture (and, no, it wasn’t due to excessive alcohol).

That was my last night in MA, and then Eric dropped me at the airport Monday morning and we headed our separate ways again.  He headed back to Western Mass, and I headed west!  I’m grateful to have had a few days to spend with wonderful people – to “take a leave” from real life, and to (reluctantly) celebrate my (28th) birthday.

Sushi, in Austin? You bet! Uchiko is the place to go.

For the past five years, I’ve been working with folks headquartered in Austin, TX. As with all relationships, we’ve had our ups and downs, but this relationship has been mostly composed of “ups” on my end. I really enjoy the team I met with in Texas this week, and not solely because they gave up an evening of personal time and took me to a fantastic sushi restaurant for dinner! 🙂

Following our dinner, we spent approximately 9 hours holed up in a conference room working together: exchanging information, setting strategy, and simply chatting.

But, at dinner…we talked about Austin, cooking, family, pets, and this blog. After explaining my indecisive nature, I surrendered my evening’s meal over to my hosts for the evening (after they’d been appropriately educated as to my “no-gos”).

So, where did said team invite me to join them for dinner? Only to the (second) best sushi joint in Austin. Second, only because the owners of “the best” sushi spot opened a second location – which is where we dined. We met at Uchiko – a well-renowned sushi restaurant.

We started off with the Innocenti Malbec 2011 La Consulta Mendoza. My companions didn’t know this, but I do love a good Malbec. I noticed that this particular wine left a heavy sugar residue in my glass. I can dig that! It means it’s “thick” (to quote a friend and coworker of mine). I had never thought to use that word to describe my “go-to” label, but hindsight being 20/20, my friend Cody was right. As with Layer Cake, Innocenti had a rich, spicy, and elegant flavor that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Then, we ordered the grilled edamame and roasted golden beets. And, Jordan, who was one of the de-facto hosts of the evening, suggested that we order some crispy brussel sprouts with lemon and chili. Oh. Dear. Lord. They. Were. DELICIOUS!! I’m pretty sure I ate most of the contents of this particular bowl!

We followed the most amazing Brussel Sprouts evah! with the hama chili, which was delightful! Not nearly as spicy as I had anticipated, but it had a nice flavor balance with the tuna, pepper and orange.

I’m not sure that I’m going to accurately capture everything else that followed. It seemed that beautifully plated dishes were being delivered at breakneck speed that night! However, I can assure you that everything we tried that evening was 1) enjoyed by all, and 2) devoured such that the bussers (who were “Johnny on the spot” quick) took only clean plates away. Folks, the food was THAT good. And, the service was top-notch.

Following the delights I have already mentioned, we had the avocado and nasu.

Then, we finished the evening with an incredibly unique and delicious dessert. Our table describes the fried milk as a new take on deconstructed s’mores, of sorts. Imagine frozen milk – deep-fried, and served with chocolate, sugar, and cream. It may not look like much, but believe me…it was a perfect finish to this fabulous dining experience.

I’m grateful to have had time to spend just enjoying some “downtime” with my business associates. Not to mention…being taken to a premier sushi restaurant in one of the coolest cities in America…I’m a lucky gal! Believe me, we spent enough time the following day really digging into the work! (for which, I’m also grateful)

Singapore! Day 7 – Chilli Crab (Clarke Quay) and Sashimi and Maki ( Robertson Quay)

Since Steve had to go into work this morning, I spent the morning walking around Robertson and Clarke Quays.  There wasn’t much to actually see or do, because very few things are open in the morning, but it was nice to wander, rather than sit in the apartment.  Mind you, it was seriously crazy hot and humid too!

That walk allowed me to further explore areas Steve had taken me to earlier.  So, when he came home shortly after noon local time and suggested we set out for lunch in Clarke Quay, I felt comfortable that I knew where he was heading.

We ended up walking over to Clarke Quay to dine at Jumbo’s Seafood. Our mission that day: take on the Chilli Crab challenge! And, we did.

We were seated with six other people at a table set for four twosomes. One twosome ordered the Chilli Crab, one ordered the Pepper Crab (boiled in black pepper) and one ordered duck (???). Steve ordered us the fried baby squid, stir-fried asparagus (shockingly, cooked in garlic!), and Chilli Crab.

Side note:  One of Steve’s coworkers (a Brit) happened upon us on the streets of Singapore and mentioned that I must be Steve’s sister – y’all….we don’t look ANYTHING alike! He’s Italian. I’m Irish-mix. He has green eyes, mine change color daily. He’s dark. I’m not just light, I’m white! And, on from there.  However, despite our distinctly different backgrounds and looks, we have an uncanny knack for liking the same things.  Very similar tastes and even mannerisms.

Back to Jumbo’s…just as the food was being served, I tied on the provided bib. I’m no dummy! Everyone else at the table (except Steve) wore their bibs too.  There was no shame in doing so.

The baby squid were delicious and served with a chile sauce (reminiscent of spring roll sauce). Crispy and easy to eat.

The asparagus was amazing! Bright green, cooked to perfection, and piled atop a delicious garlic sauce.  Steve and I found ourselves doing the same thing, pushing the garlic to the corners to try to soak it all up with our asparagus!  And, we devoured the veggies!

Then came our Chilli Crab, which is boiled and served in a delicious chilli pepper sauce that is the consistency of a heavy soup or stew.

Steve served me a claw first and I broke the meat out with ease (and no mess!).

I think I impressed us both equally – as I had anticipated wearing the red pepper sauce all over. Granted, my bib was quite covered, but my hands, arms and dress were not!  I will say that I tired of using my chopsticks by the end of this meal.  It’s so messy that it becomes difficult to use them the whole time – plus, it’s totally appropriate to use your hands and just eat the meat.  We proceeded to suck every last piece out of that pot, and then proceeded to eat the sauce by the spoonful.

We certainly did not leave hungry, and we managed to leave clean!

We then set off to Little India to visit the Wet Market – fresh fish, meat and produce vendors galore!

Most of it was closed by the time we weaved our way through Little India, but the stuff that was left was still amazing!  The seafood alone would have me visiting several times a week!

We rushed home to beat a rain that never came. Both Steve and I were convinced that it was going to pour, but the threat was idle. Regardless, we used the time to relax and watch “The Hangover 2“, set in Thailand – one of Steve’s favorite places, and one we were going to try to visit, but couldn’t make happen.

Then, off to a small Japanese restaurant, Yume Ya, for sushi dinner. We both had a tough time ordering, because there were so many things we wanted to try! We ended up having Shake (Salmon) sashimi, Kanpachi (yellow tail) sashimi, Spicy Tuna Maki Temaki (spicy tuna roll), Soft Shell Crab Maki Temaki (soft shell crab roll), and the Yumeya Special Maki (house special roll).

Neither of us were huge fans of the spicy tuna roll, as the flavors were overwhelming since it was topped with a 12 spices blend. The house roll and the soft shell crab rolls were a different story. Both delicious!

We managed to finish all of the food and went home happy!  I was especially happy, as I was FINALLY able to pay a bill here.  Steve has been so very generous, and I had to sneak one in while I’m here.  🙂

I’m on my own in Singapore Tuesday since Steve has work commitments. I haven’t decided what I’m going to do since we’ve covered so much ground already.  But, I’m sure it will be a splendid day 8 on vacation!

The Ker-Bear Roll! A fun discovery during Girls’ Night Out.

I was hoping to add a post or two from outside of the greater Detroit area, but I really haven’t been traveling for work lately.  It’s kind of a bummer, and I miss traveling to see coworkers across the nation, but that’s the deal with respect to my current role.  Hopefully, I’ll still be able to get to South Carolina (CLEMSON!) and to Singapore (for fun) this fall!  At least then I can mix things up a bit!

Now, onto the latest great meal I had out…

(No, all of my meals are not great – I’ve had people ask me that.  Two rather lackluster experiences were documented here and here)

A couple of weeks ago, the girls who were featured in my first post came into town for a visit.  Megan and Sharon (who was also featured in this post) have been really good friends of mine for many years.

 

We’ve had tons of dinners together – at each others’ homes, and out on the town.  In the picture above, counterclockwise: Sharon, Ker, Megan, and Dana (local friend).

That Saturday night, Sharon agreed to “take one for the team” to support Megan’s craving (pun intended) for sushi.  So, I made reservations at Crave Lounge in Dearborn.  Sharon has never been a fan of sushi, and in particular, the nori (seaweed) used in making maki (rolls).  She figured some of the small plates Crave offers would be just fine for dinner – trooper that she is!

We started off with one of my favorite appetizers, the Watermelon Napoleon (three time award winner + healthy choice award, consisting of seedless watermelon, French feta, toasted walnuts, Michigan tart cherries, organic Mediterranean olives, Mediterranean micro herbs, organic olive oil, and Balsamic vinaigrette).  I’ve made my own versions of this dish at home when I want a tasty, yet light meal.

We also munched on edamame (doesn’t everyone do that at a sushi joint?) while chatting, laughing, and giving our server, Phillip, a complex! When he came back to take our dinner order, we decided to try one roll with soy paper rather than nori, to see if Sharon would like it.  Our other friend, Dana, has an aversion to soy, so we had to balance things out.  Note: Phillip did not charge us for the first substitution, but soy paper is typically a $1 up charge per roll at Crave.

At Phillip’s recommendation, we ordered a couple of “off the menu” rolls.  To the left is the “Crave Roll” (made w/ traditional nori) and on the right is the “Care Bear Roll” (affectionately, renamed the “Ker Bear Roll” and made with mamenori (soy paper).  As you can see, I’m never quick enough to catch a photo before we dig right in!

The Crave Roll is basically a fried California Roll, with light seaweed on top, seared Ahi tuna , jalapeno, Wasabi aioli, and a sweet drizzle.  We all enjoyed the roll, including Sharon – who couldn’t taste the nori.  Great flavors, folks!

*Oh, and it’s worth mentioning that Sharon received “rookie chop sticks” from the owner – he made them for her on-the-spot! A total MacGyver move…the chop stick wrapper, a rubber band, and VOILA! She can use chop sticks!*

But, the big hit of the night was the “Ker Bear Roll” which was comprised of spicy tuna , shrimp tempura, asparagus, crunchy flakes and mango Albacore tuna aioli. Folks, it was tremendously flavorful! So much so that we ordered a second serving!  (see below)

 

While that was closing in on the end of our dinner, Sharon and I should have taken the hint that Megan and Dana had bigger plans in mind!  (Those two are mentioned in the post I referred to earlier)

Yup, folks.  Those are lemon drop shots in their hands (and their wine in the foreground!).  Just the start of the evening for these two crazy ladies! And, I love them for knowing that Sharon and I wouldn’t “hang”, so we were better off at home later that night, and into the next morning!

Finally, I have to post a picture of the fabulous man who was our server that night. Phillip was not only an incredible sport (y’all should have heard some of the conversation he overheard that night!), but he made great recommendations, AND, he was pretty nice eye-candy!  He’s preparing for a teaching career, and I can already see that he will be the most popular teacher in school!  🙂

 

I’m a fairly regular customer at Crave Lounge (though I don’t frequent it as much as I’d like to!), and I’ve never left disappointed.  This night, however, was particularly enjoyable because we tried some new rolls, we had a delightful server, we chatted with the management (great people!), and we were amongst dear friends.

If you’re in the area, and craving (pun intended, again!) sushi, I do recommend Crave Lounge.  The atmosphere is cool, the staff is great, and the food is delicious!  I’m also told that the menu has been changed up a bit over the past week.  New Carpaccio items, new appetizers, small plates and rolls.  And…anyone who’s known me for any period of time knows that my intel is rock-solid!  😉

My first two nights in NYC – I let my friends choose for me.

I’m in New York for a conference this week, so I know I won’t have much time to explore or enjoy the extensive culinary options that Manhattan boasts. It’s kind of a bummer – even our networking dinners always seem to be at a high-end chain restaurant. Never a local gem. And, while these aren’t true “She Ordered What?!?” posts, I’m posting them as such since my friends ordered for me, and I really didn’t know what I was in for!

After what felt like an epic journey to get here (which had me ranting on Facebook and Twitter – ignorant mom with your mobile phone stuck to your ear while your children disrupted every last passenger on the plane, I’m talking to you! American Airlines, I’m also talking to you for boarding, de-planing, re-boarding, de-planing again, canceling, all the while lapsing in customer service and forcing passengers to carry their own bags up and down rickety stairs while in dresses, carrying other personal items, babies, etc, and up again, and down again – and then finally getting us to NYC. – post-script: same bologna on the way home!), I decided to take the advice of my friend Daniel. He tweeted me and advised me to grab chicken and rice with the “crack” sauce (the white sauce I would surely get addicted to) from a street food vendor on the corner of 53rd and 6th called Halal’s. He also advised me that their would likely be a line, indicative of just how good the food was!

It was about a ten minute walk from my hotel, and it was a gorgeous night. The line was 6-7 people deep at 8PM. That was a good sign!

I spent $6.00, plus a $2.00 tip, and carried home enough food to feed four people! I spent more than twice that on a glass of wine from the hotel bar!!

But, Daniel was correct. It was really good food, and the “crack sauce” was yummy. Not spicy like I thought it would be, given Daniel’s addiction to Sriracha sauce, but that’s why I was also given a tiny tub of red spicy sauce along with the white sauce. To spice it up!

I was only able to eat about 1/4 – 1/3 of the portion, and I wish I had a fridge in the room to save the rest. But, alas, most of it went to waste. 😦

I think that food gave me some good energy too! Monday morning, I woke up early and went for a run through the city. I knew I was motoring way faster than I used to when I was a regular runner…and map my run (while getting a bit confused amongst the skyscrapers) seemed to agree. I covered some pretty good ground in about 18 min. And, I broke a nice sweat. I was glad to get a workout in, because I knew I was meeting a dear, dear friend for dinner that night. Beth lived in the city for 12 years before she and her husband bought a home in New Jersey last year. My original plan was to go visit them Sunday, but as I mentioned, that didn’t happen.

So, after a day of fruitful meetings, I set out on foot to meet Beth at Inakaya – at 40th and 8th. Again, a short walk, but nice to get out for a bit!

After her long day, and the rough start to my trip (did I mention that my brother called that morning to tell me my mom had broken her leg and was in the hospital?), we decided to split a bottle of wine along with sushi, sashimi, egg custard, and maki.

Round two – we had already finished off the sashimi and sushi platters (I forgot to take pictures because we just dug right in!).

I let Beth order everything, since she knows me as well as I know myself! We caught up (it had been a year since we’d seen each other) and enjoyed really fine food. The lone “eh” piece was the mackerel. Fishy and not up to snuff with the other pieces.

It was a great night though…how can you go wrong with a good friend, good wine, good food, and in an amazing city?!?

A bit later, another friend messaged me and asked if I wanted to join him for dinner. I told him I’d keep him company and watch him eat…so that’s what I did. I kid you not, Jeff polished off this whole platter of chicken parmesan before we went on to meet up his colleagues and business contacts of mine. I had to throw this photo in for good measure!

While I wish I had time to spend walking the city like I do on personal trips to Manhattan, I simply don’t. I am grateful to have had two nights to dine as I like to, without forced networking that comes with conference attendance! Tonight, it’s about networking (and turning back into that shy girl I was so many years ago!). Wish me luck!
